ThinkSwiss Research Scholarships 2023 Announcement

The ThinkSwiss scholarship program is run by the Science Office at the Swiss Embassy in Washington, D.C. The State Secretariat for Education, Research, and Innovation (SERI) are responsible for funding the program, and the Swiss Embassy in Ottawa, Canada, provides assistance and support. 

The program’s objectives are to encourage research opportunities for students from the United States and Canada in Switzerland and to enhance communication between Swiss, American, and Canadian academic and research institutions. The ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship offers funding based on the duration of your study: a CHF 1,800 ($1,800) per month scholarship for two to three months (CHF 5,400 maximum). Before the travel date, the full amount of the scholarship will be transferred to the recipient’s bank.

It is worth mentioning that this amount only includes a portion of the typical student’s living costs, and prior to a visa can be approved, the Swiss Cantonal authorities will ask you to show that you have adequate finances.

What are the Eligibility Criteria for ThinkSwiss Scholarships?

To be considered for a ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship, you have to qualify in the following: 

  • You must be currently enrolled in a recognized institution or college in the United States or Canada.
  • You must be a graduate or undergraduate student who has finished their sophomore year by the date the research term in Switzerland commences.
  • A written confirmation from a professor at a Swiss institution that they will accept you for a research stay in their group is required. You can get help with finding a professor through the ThinkSwiss website (Link in end)

Are US and Canadian Applicants Eligible Only? 

Regardless of your background, if you’re enrolled at an accredited US or Canadian college then you are eligible for the ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship.  

Are There Any Language Requirements to apply for ThinkSwiss Scholarships?

Foreign language abilities are not necessary for a research stay in Switzerland because the working language is mainly English. However, knowing any Swiss native language would be beneficial in everyday life.

How to Apply for ThinkSwiss Scholarships?

The application period has begun. Get started on your goal of studying in Switzerland right away! Fill up your contact form correctly and provide all supporting documents in PDF format before December 31st, 2022 to apply.

To ensure your smooth selection for this scholarship, your application must include:

  • Application form submission for ThinkSwiss Scholarship
  • Research Proposal or outline of your research project. This can include a summary of your objectives, aims, and tasks of your project that your host professor finalized with you. Your outline must be a maximum of two pages. 
  • A motivational letter outlining your reasons for deserving the ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship, why you’d make a great student ambassador, and why Switzerland is your research destination (within 2 pages)
  • A CV for Scholarship application (no more than two pages) 
  • A copy of your most recent academic records, including diplomas (if applicable)
  • A letter of admission from the Swiss host institution or host professor (this letter is to highlight the relevance of your research)
  • A letter of support from a current professor

The deadline for accepting applications for the ThinkSwiss Scholarship is February 28, 2023, and all ThinkSwiss scholarship winners will be notified about the acceptance by March 15, 2023.
